When you see your dentist for an initial or routine exam, they will check your gums. In addition to a visual and tactile examination of the gums, we examine x-rays of the bone supporting your teeth. If signs of gum disease exist, we discuss our findings with you. In all but the most severe cases we can show you how the destruction of periodontal disease can be stopped and your teeth can last a lifetime. Some early signs of gum disease that you might detect at home are:
- gums that bleed on brushing or flossing -red, swollen or tender gums
- edges of gums that pull away from teeth -persistent bad breath
- loosening of a tooth or teeth
